Who We Are:
Welcome to the Sakonnet Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program where our mission is for kids to enjoy their time on the water while learning nautical skills and forging lasting friendships. Our junior sailing program boasts a team of instructors dedicated to teaching a wide range of classes, from introductory boating to competitive racing in Optis, C420s, Zests, Quests and Ynglings. Our students have an abundance of opportunities to explore sailing in a fun and supportive environment. Sakonnet Yacht Club has a vibrant racing team that actively participates in Narragansett Bay Yachting Association (NBYA) junior regattas throughout the summer. We host a junior NBYA regatta at home once a summer in addition to our own junior club championships.
Our Junior Sailing Program strives to foster a lifelong love of sailing for children aged 9–17. While we focus on imparting sailing skills, our broader aim is to create an atmosphere where kids and families can form friendships and relish their time at our club.
Our Harbor Camp program offers a gateway to life on the water and around our harbor for children aged 6–8. Operating akin to a traditional day camp, Harbor Camp places paramount importance on safety and fun above all else!
Join Us for the 2025 Summer Season:
We are currently recruiting for the 2025 SYC summer season, spanning approximately 10 weeks from mid-June to late August. JSP Sailing Instructors typically work Monday - Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with some Saturday mornings. Harbor Camp Counselors typically work from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm on Mondays - Thursdays.
Whom We Seek:
At the Sakonnet Yacht Club, we are on the lookout for highly motivated individuals with a passion for working with children. While sailing expertise is crucial for sailing instructors, an equally vital aspect is a positive attitude and enthusiasm when interacting with kids.
Head Sailing Instructor : The Head Instructor is the cornerstone of our instructional team, overseeing all sailing instructions and race coaches to ensure lesson plans are well crafted and effectively delivered. The role requires a sailing level 2 Instructor certification ( level 3 preferred ), extensive teaching experience, and a strong commitment to safety and excellence. As a key leader, the Head Instructor closely collaborated with the Program Director, to maintain the highest safety standards, support staff, and serve as a point of contact for parents. Successful candidates will embody leadership, professionalism, and a passion for fostering growth in both students and staff.
Sailing Instructor: Our Sailing Instructors must hold at least a US Sailing Level 1 certification (or equivalent). Successful candidates showcase not only a love for working with children but also a commitment to enhancing their own sailing skills. Instructors, serving as role models, collaborate effectively with their peers, prioritize safety, and craft engaging lessons throughout the summer.
Racing Coach: Our Racing Coach plays a pivotal role in nurturing the competitive spirit and sailing and racing proficiency of our junior racers. The ideal candidate brings a US SAILING Small Boat Sailing Level 3 Coach certification (Level 2 is required), substantial experience instructing juniors in sailing programs, and a robust racing background, preferably with Optis, Lasers, or 420s. Committed to instilling a love for sailing, the Racing Coach collaborates seamlessly with other instructors, contributing to the skill development of the team. Enthusiastic about working with a dedicated group of young racers, this role involves coaching during practices, regattas, and travel as per the approved schedule.
Head Counselor for Harbor Camp : The Head Counselor leads our Harbor Camp team, combining creativity and organizational skills, to deliver a safe, fun, and engaging program. Responsible for developing daily lesson plans and schedules. The Head Counselor ensures that all recreational activities promote a love of the Harbor and exploration. Prior experience of working with young children is required, as is a demonstrated ability to manage staff and craft dynamic, water based activities. Comfort on the water, swimming proficiency, and enthusiasm for creating an inclusive and exciting environment are essential for success in this role.
Harbor Camp Counselor: Harbor Camp Counselors need a combination of both creativity and patience in order to be successful. While previous experience with children is beneficial, coachability and openness to feedback are key traits. While sailing experience is not mandatory, comfort on the water and proficiency in swimming, rowing, and stand-up paddle boarding are essential.
